Director of the Ports and Sailing Bureau of Guilan Province Ali Naeimi said Iran is holding a maritime drill on meeting oil spill emergency situations.

The drills will be held on June 15-16, he said, IRNA news agency reported May 20.

The Ports and Sailing Organization is the national organization responsible for enforcing maritime conventions related to ship and rigs-related pollutions, he said.

The organization is equipped with special exploration and rescue watercraft as well as advanced equipment for fighting oil contaminations in order to implement the said conventions, Naeimi noted.

With ten berths and a real loading capacity of seven million metric tons, the Anzali port is the most important Iranian port by the Caspian Sea.

The port is a short distance from Baku in Azerbaijan, Astrakhan and Lagan in Russia, Türkmenbaşy in Turkmenistan and Aktau in Kazakhstan giving Iran access to the 300-million market of former Soviet Union states.
