Three men were hanged in Iran 's northeastern city of Mashhad in public on the morning of May 27.

The Iranian court had sentenced them to death by hanging on kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of weapons and ammunition charges, Iran 's Mehr news agency reported.

One of the hanged men was 38-year-old, while another two were reportedly 27-years-old.

The persons, whose names were not disclosed, were executed upon the order of the Mashahd Revolutionary court. The head of Iran 's judiciary, Sadeq Amoli Larijani had approved the regional court's sentence.

Murder, rape, armed robbery and the trafficking of drugs in quantities in excess of 5 kilograms are among the crimes punishable by death in Iran.

Iran ranks second, after China, in terms of the number of executions in the world.

At least 852 people were executed in Iran from July 2013 to June 2014, according to the latest report of the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed.
