One person has died of the Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Iran's northern Mazandaran province.

The CCHF is a widespread tick-borne viral disease that affects domestic and wild animals and may also be transmitted to humans.

A 29-year old man from Chalous, Mazandaran province was died from the CCHF, Ghasem Jan Babaei, head of the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences said, Iran's ISNA news agency reported June 20.

He further said that the CCHF case was confirmed in laboratories of Mazandaran province and Tehran city.

Jan Babaei added that the case occurred as a result of contact with infected animals carrying virus.

Similar cases were reported in the past in the country.

During 2011-2012 years, 14 people died in Iran as a result of sporadic cases of the CCHF in the country.

The importation of livestock to Iran from eastern borders is considered as the cause of the spread of the disease.

The highest number of the disease was reported in Iran's south eastern Sistan and Baluchestan province. During 1999-2011, some 610 cases of the disease have been reported, which led to the death of 60 people.
