Iran stood at 138th place among 162 countries in the Global Peace Index for 2015, according to the nonprofit Institute for Economics and Peace.

The institute released its Global Peace Index for 2015 on June 26, which ranks 162 nations around the globe based on 23 qualitative and quantitative factors like the level of violent crime, involvement in conflicts and the degree of militarization.

The Islamic Republic ranked 12 in Middle East and North Africa ranking, upper than countries such as Israel (148 in global ranking), Iraq (161 in global ranking) and Syria (162 in global ranking), meanwhile stood below Saudi Arabia (95 in global ranking), Bahrain (107 in global ranking) and Egypt (137 in global ranking).

Qatar was the most peaceful country in the Middle East (with overall rank of 30), followed by Kuwait (overall rank of 33), the UAE (49) and Jordan (71).

Iran alongside with Syria, North Korea, Afghanistan, Central African Republic and Zimbabwe is among the countries that have seen significant increases in violence containment expenditure as a percent of GDP between 2008 and 2014.

The Islamic Republic stood at the 61st place in terms of violence containment rank by percent of GDP. The direct violence containment costs shared seven percent of the country's GDP.

This year, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, and Benin were the four countries that made the most improvement, while Iceland was ranked the most peaceful nation in the world.

Six out of the top 10 most peaceful countries were European, with Denmark and Austria holding the second and third spots.

After four years of civil war Syria remained at the bottom of the rankings. And Iraq, the other country where the Islamic State group (IS) holds large areas of territory, dropped below South Sudan and Afghanistan to second last place.
