Iran has successfully tested an air defense robot, deputy commander of Iranian Army Ground Forces, Brigadier General Kiumars Heidari said.

The commander referred to the robot as one of the big achievements of the Islamic Republic army, the news portal of the Iranian army reported July 23.

The robot is capable of firing anti-aircraft rockets from dual and quad launchers, Heidari said, adding the robot can work at a distance of 500 meters from the operators. He further said that the army would use the domestically produced robot during its upcoming drills.

The Iranian commander also said that manufacturing and use of different kinds of robots is on the agenda of the army ground forces.

Various robotic projects including minesweepers and monitoring robots are underway in the army and significant successes have been gained in this area, Heidari said. He added that Iran 's first sentinel robot would be operational by March 2016.

Iranian media outlets report that Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems in recent years.

Tehran established an arms development program during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s to counter the weapons embargo imposed on it by the U.S. and its Western allies.
