An earthquake 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale has hit the central Iranian province of Kerman.

The seismic movement took place at 14:56 local time at the depth of 8 kilometers in Sirach district, ISNA news agency reported July 31.

Salehi, director of the provincial Crisis Management Staff, said while there is yet no report of any casualties, search and rescue teams are dispatched to inspect the area.

He predicted that due to the magnitude and low depth of the quake, there must be some damage caused by the earthquake.

Kamal Javanmard, a member of the city council of Kerman (capital of Kerman Province) said life in the city is normal.

The earthquake hit 13 villages but teams dispatched to the area say there is no damage to three of the villages visited so far, Kamal Javanmard, a local rescue and relief official said.
