At least 11 people have drowned in Iranian provinces of Tehran, East Azerbaijan, North Khorasan and Hormozgan as result of floods on Sept. 18 night.

Heavy and sudden rain in the country caused floods in several regions, especially in the northern Tehran as well as north western East Azerbaijan and Southern province of Hormozgan, Nasser Charkhsaz, head of Iran's Red Crescent's Relief and Rescue Organization said, the official IRIB news agency reported Sept. 19.

Five people drowned in Tehran and four other in Hormozgan province. One person also was killed in East Azerbaijan's Azarshar and one in North Khorasan, Bojnord.

Most of the drowned were on the margins of rivers when the heavy rain began, Charkhsaz said. He further said that that the country's meteorological organization earlier had warned about the rain.

Meanwhile, some people are still missing, according to the Iran's media.

Floods have damaged some roads, in particular in rural areas. Tehran-Mashhad international road also was closed for more than two hours as a result of the floods.
