Drug abuse, an important problem in Iran, is still claiming large number of lives in the country.

As much as 1191 people died of drug-related issues in the first five months of the current year (Iranian calendar year starts March 21), said Talat Ghane, Secretary of the National Center for Drugs and Toxins of Iran's Food and Drug Administration.

ISNA quoted Ghane as saying Nov. 6 that 53 percent of those dead were killed as a result of an overdose, and 32 percent died from complications of drug addiction.

Meanwhile, he did not elaborate on the causes of death of the remaining 15 percent of the victims.

Ghane further said that last year drug poisoning killed 2986 people in Iran.

According to Iranian media, drug abuse has increased dramatically in the country. Currently, 50 percent of prisoners in Iran are being contained on charges of drug use and trafficking.
