By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Iran is defending itself 1,000 kilometers beyond its borders, according to Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

He made the remarks speaking to the families of a number of Iranian advisers killed in Syria, Fars agency reported Dec. 9.

"The Islamic revolution is being spread by the Islamic Republic. It owes its power to martyrs," added Jafari.

"Our martyrs are defending Islam," he further said.

Jafari also claimed that the "fate of Islam and the world will be defined in the conflicts in the western Asia".

Western powers and some regional countries, such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been supporting the opposition in Syria.

While these countries accuse Iran of meddling in the Syrian crisis, Tehran says it is only helping the legitimate government of President Bashar Assad with military advisers and refrains from direct engagement in battle.
