Around 100,000 tons of olive were collected since the beginning of the olive harvest, said Malikverdi Mohammad Ramazani, the head of nation-wide olive harvesting project, Mehr news agency reported.

"The harvesting began in 82,000-hectare olive gardens in the country's central and southern provinces, for the olive oil production," Ramazani said. "We forecast 5 million tons of olive oil will be produced."

According to IRNA news agency, Iran is 11th among 43 countries in growing olives. Iran collects an average of 100,000 tons of olives each year. About 70 percent of the product is used for canning and 30 percent for olive oil production.
