Iran has arrested 10 employees of a customhouse on financial corruption charges amounting to $4.8 billion.

The 10 who used to work at Parvizkhan Customhouse in Kermanshah Province in western Iran were arrested by intelligence forces and sent to prison, Tasnim news agency reported Sept. 2.

The report says the huge size of the crime indicates there are more people to be arrested in the case.

One of the charges set up against the perpetrators is facilitating the entry of over 800 tons of pure grain alcohol into the country. The supply of edible alcohol is forbidden in Iran because Islamic law forbids its consumption as drink.

The report says the suspects have also helped some 2,000 temporary-entry containers to smuggle goods into the country.

One of the major afflictions of Iran’s economy is goods smuggling. A recent report said the value of goods smuggled into the country is equal to that of its oil revenues.
