Next Netanyahu, Abbas meeting in two weeks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have agreed to meet directly to negotiate a peace agreement, with the next meeting scheduled to take place in the region in two weeks, a US official said Thursday, dpa reported.

The US special envoy for the Middle East, George Mitchell, told reporters the meeting will take place September 14-15 and said the location was still be discussed. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will attend the meeting.

Netanyahu and Abbas agreed to meet every two weeks, Mitchell said, as the first direct peace talks in nearly two years began Thursday in Washington.

The two leaders had finished their first round of talks with Clinton, and were to resume discussions for a second round on Thursday.
