Istanbul police have arrested 102 Syrian citizens who were trying to illegally travel to Romania, Anadolu agency reported on Friday.
According to the agency, most of the detained are women with children.
During the conflict in Syria which began in March 2011, more than 115,000 people were killed in the country and over 4.2 million became refugees in Syrian territory and two million fled to neighbouring countries. The main burden of receiving refugees lay on Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The total population of Syria before the conflict amounted to 20 million.
More than four million will have to leave Syria or become displaced in 2014 due to the deterioration of the situation in the country, according to a UN report.
The head of the Turkish Office for the Prevention and Emergency Management (AFAD), Fuat Oktay said earlier that the number of Syrian refugees living in Turkey had reached 300,000.
