Eight killed in India building collapse; dozens trapped

At least eight workers were killed Saturday and dozens feared trapped when a building that was under construction collapsed in India's south-western state of Goa, dpa reported.

Officials said they were trying to ascertain the number of men at work when the five-storey building came crashing down in Cancona, broadcaster Times Now reported, quoting local police.

Witnesses estimated more than 40 workers were on the site.

Eight bodies were extricated from the debris while two injured workers were taken to hospital.

The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.

Building collapses are common in India with shoddy construction and poor building material often to blame.

A number of building collapses have been reported from the nearby city of Mumbai in recent months. More than 60 people died in an apartment building collapse in the city in September.
