At least 14 construction workers were killed Saturday and dozens feared trapped in India after a five-storey building collapsed in the southern state of Goa, dpa reported.

More than 50 workers were at the site in Cancona town when a section of the building collapsed, the IANS news agency reported.

Local police officer Abhay Naik said around 20 workers were rescued and taken to hospital.

The broadcaster NDTV said more than 100 people are believed to be trapped. Army soldiers are helping with the rescue operation, it added.

The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.

"The rescue operations will go on through the night. Cranes and bull-dozers to remove the debris to rescue those trapped," Naik said.

Building collapses are common in India.

More than 60 people died in an apartment building collapse in the city of Mumbai in September.
