The interim president and the prime minister of the Central African Republic resigned Friday, bowing to pressure from regional leaders, according to local radio stations in CAR.

President Michel Djotodia and prime minister Nicolas Tiangaye stepped down after central African leaders held a two-day summit in Chad to debate the worsening sectarian conflict in CAR, which has displaced almost half a million people and has killed hundreds, dpa reported.

Djotodia's government has been struggling to restore law and order in the small nation rich in gold and diamonds.
