Serbia's president on Wednesday officially dissolved parliament and decreed that early elections be held March 16, dpa reported.

The ruling Progressive Party (SNS) said at the weekend snap parliamentary elections were needed in order to secure a firm mandate for reforms.

Serbia opened membership talks with the European Union on January 21 and will have to adjust much of its regulation to fit into the bloc.

Opinion polls tip the SNS to win as much as 45 per cent in the elections.

The Socialist Party, the junior partner in the ruling coalition, and the opposition Democratic Party are expected to only secure support in the low double digits.

The government continues in a caretaker capacity until the next cabinet is in place.
