Former Iranian president and the opposition reformist camp leader Mohammad Khatami called on two presidential candidates Hassan Rouhani and Mohammed Reza Arif to unite, a statement posted on the official website of Khatami says.
According to Khatami, the consolidationof the two candidates would mean the subordination of the desires of society and the development of the country.
Rouhani and Arif have to create a united coalition and should support each other, Khatami said on Saturday at a meeting with the candidates for the municipality elections.
According to Iranian media, Mohammed Reza Arefi who was the first vice-president during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami, and Hassan Rouhani who was the official representative of Iran at the negotiations on the nuclear issue during the presidency of Khatami, are going to form a coalition.
Khatami also touched on the disconfirmation of the candidacy of Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
"Disconfirmation of Rafsanjani's candidacy deprived the people of a great opportunity, Khatami said.
On June 14, Iranians will go to over 66,000 polling stations across the country to cast their votes, while some 285 polling stations will be set up for Iranian nationals in other countries.
The voters will select the successor of the current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third term according to the country's constitutional laws.
The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.
