Tabriz will be declared a Shiite spiritual capital during President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to the region, Tourism and Cultural Monuments Protection Department Chief Turab Mahammadi was quoted as saying by MEHR news agency today.
Tabriz was always faithful to Prophet Muhammad, the official said.
"The department unanimously accepts the offer to name Tabriz a Shiite spiritual capital. This will be officially declared during Ahmadinejad's visit," Mohammadi said.
Ahmadinejad will visit Tabriz Wednesday.
