The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, called on Islamic world to examine Convention on the Rights of the Child to surmount hurdles impeding implementation, the OIC statement wrote.
Ihsanoglu, who delivered a speech before the opening session of the International Conference on the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the adoption of the CRC by the UN General Assembly implies that the OIC member States commit to the CRC stipulations and turn them into concrete action by articulating proper laws and policy programs.
He also emphasized that this commitment entails examination of the commitment to the CRC at the meetings scheduled to take place as part of the ongoing conference in order to pinpoint and exchange views on the hurdles that hinder adequate implementation and discuss the ways and means of surmounting
Ihsanoglu noted that the number of children in the Muslim world nears 600 million which, in percentage terms, would amount to over 40 percent of Muslims, and almost a quarter of the world's children.
Despite of efforts made by the OIC Member States in providing care and protection for children, approximately 4.5 million children under five years of age pass away every year due to diseases and malnutrition.
He underscored that the establishment of an OIC Independent Permanent Commission for Human Rights will play a major role in promoting and protecting the rights of children in the Muslim world.
Under the Ten-year Program of Action (TYPOA) that the OIC adopted at the Third Extraordinary Summit held in Makkah Al-Mukkaramah in December 2005, the issue of human rights became a part of an unprecedented move in the OIC's long history. It also called for exploring the possibility of establishing an independent permanent body to promote human rights, as well as incorporating amendments into national laws and regulations in order to guarantee the respect of human rights in the OIC Member States.
