Egyptian President appoints new Sheikh for Al-Azhar University

New Sheikh of Islamic Al-Azhar University was appointed Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al-Tayyib, who will replace in this post Sheikh Mohammed Sayyid Tantawi, who died last week, Middle East news agency reported.

On Friday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak issued a decree according to which Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al-Tayyib was appointed Sheikh of the Al-Azhar University, revered in the Islamic world.
Al-Tayyib has been served as the rector of Al-Azhar University since 2003, he took this post after he became one of the muftis of Egypt.

81-year-old Sheikh Tantawi died last Wednesday as a result of heart attack in Saudi Arabia, where he was on a visit.
