Azerbaijani opposition party rallies Turkish embassy

Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 14 / Trend , A.Huseynbala/

An Azerbaijani opposition party has rallied the Turkish Embassy in Azerbaijan protesting against the signing of protocols between Turkey and Armenia.

"The action lasted about 10 minutes, we read the resolution of the rally and handed over the paper to the representative of the embassy," Chairman of the National Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA), Tufan Karimli told Trend on Oct. 14.

Turkish and Armenian Foreign Ministers, Ahmet Davudoglu and Edward Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in the Swiss city of Zurich on Oct. 10.

Karimli said during the rally, they sounded slogans "Down with Armenia," "Long live the Turkic solidarity", "Bozgurds (Grey wolves) are immortal, motherland is indivisible ". "Approximately 10 minutes later, the police prevented the continuation of the rally," said the chairman of the party.

During the rally, the protestors also expressed disapproval of the position of the Turkish authorities about the opening of borders, the chairman of the party said. "We also urged the Turkish Parliament not to ratify the protocols," said Karimli.

Due to the lack of prior permission for the rally, Karimli said 11 people were arrested and taken to the 21st Police Department of the Nizami District Police Office. "The party members were released after hours of detention in the office," said Karimli.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
