OSCE Minsk Group to visit Nagorno-Karabakh region

U.S, Washington, Nov. 10 / Trend News N.Bogdanova /

The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs will once again visit the region.

The visit is scheduled for November to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, U.S. Co-Chair Robert Bradtke's office told Trend News.

The mediators will prepare the next bilateral meeting for the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents before late November.

The agreement was reached during a recent visit of diplomats to the region Nov. 4-6.

In Baku and Yerevan, both presidents reiterated their commitment to continuing their talks, with the objective of making progress toward reaching an agreement on basic principles for resolving peacefully the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the OSCE Minsk Group said in a statement.

"They accepted the proposal of the co-chairs to organize their next bilateral meeting - the sixth such this year - before late November at a time and place to be confirmed," the statement said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group -- Russia, France, and the U.S. -- are currently holding the peace negotiations.
