OSCE does not plan to visit region soon: Russian co-chair

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 18 / Trend News E.Tariverdiyeva /

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs do not plan to visit the region soon, Russian mediator Yuri Merzlyakov told Trend News.

"The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are not going to visit the region," he said over the telephone. "The date of the visit has not yet been agreed upon."

Earlier the OSCE Minsk Group distributed a press release in Baku and Yerevan, stating that both the countries' presidents are dedicated to continuing talks to achieve further progress toward agreeing on the basic principles of peacefully resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
