OSGE MG co-chairs expected to present new proposals during their visit to region: Azerbaijani Deputy FM

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 7 / Trend News M.Aliyev /

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are expected to present new proposals within their visit to region, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov said.

"The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs may visit region and submit new proposals," Azimov told journalists today. "New proposals can be regarded as a progress in the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem."

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

The frequent meetings may be regarded as dynamic in the process, he added.

"We can say the ongoing talks testify for efficient nature of these processes. The presidents hold frequent and consecutive discussions over the issue in a short period and this is quite important element to take into account, he said.

Armenia should know that Azerbaijan is eager to demonstrate effective approach in the talks and opposes wasting time by using the talks, Azimov said.

At present stage the basic principles are being mulled, the discussions are held on the presidents' level presidents and they will further continue, he added.
