Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 8 / Trend M. Aliyev /
Futile talks to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict oblige Azerbaijan to use alternative methods of solving the problem, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev said at a meeting with the top U.S. Air Force Commander in Europe and Eurasia, Gen. Roger A. Brady today.
Abiyev informed U.S General that the negotiations conducted within the OSCE Minsk Group more than 15 years have not been successful yet, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry press service said.
Military cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States and the situation in the South Caucasus were discussed at the meeting.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
