Azerbaijan strengthens its position in global political arena in 2009: Azerbaijani political scientists

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 17 / Trend M.Aliyev /

For Azerbaijan 2009 was marked by the fact that the country has achieved not only by what it was heard in the international political arena, but rather strictly managed to defend its positions, political analyst Rasim Musabeyov said at a press conference on results of 2009 today.

According to him, Azerbaijan defended its position on refusal to recognize the independence of Kosovo.

"Despite the signing of the Turkish-Armenian protocols between and U.S. President Barack Obama calls, Azerbaijan has not softened its position and did not take part in the meeting in Turkey," the politician said.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10. Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.

According to him, Azerbaijan will not compromise its interests in the issue of gas prices.

The analyst hopes that in 2010 Azerbaijan will make some progress in the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.

Musabeyov said the U.S provided financial assistance to Armenia for many years and the fact that Azerbaijan has today says in a loud voice is the country's adequate response in current circumstances.

According to political scientist Rasim Agayev, Azerbaijan is speaking at the international diplomatic arena not so long ago, so the country has been stabilized its position in recent years. The main thing is that the international community pays attention to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, he said.

"If we are going to peacefully solve this problem, we must be consistent in domestic and foreign policy" Agayev said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. General Assembly's resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.

At this stage, it is necessary to work more closely with the Azerbaijani diaspora in the United States and other countries, analyst Fikret Sadikhov said.

"Organization of concerts and cultural events are not very promotes the growth of our influence in America," Sadikhov said "We must strengthen the work among the intellectuals of the United States and finance promotion of our national position."

Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the political scientist said it is an unsolvable obstacle to the leading world powers in the region to implement large projects.

The protocol is the easiest option agreements, so the countries have chosen it, Sadikhov said. He was commenting on the settlement of relations between Turkey and Armenia.

According to Agayev originally Turkey and Armenia would like to sign a protocol of intent, but later came to believe that it is very insignificant step.

Musabeyov believes if the protocols will be ratified, it will put Yerevan in a ridiculous position. "This explains the fact that the Armenian President proposed to design amendments providing for the possibility of revocation signatures of the country" he said.
