MP Ali Masimli suggested appealing to the U.N. for non-fulfillment of its resolutions regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
"Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's resolutions on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Masimli said at today's parliamentary meeting. "So, Azerbaijan must appeal to the U.N."
He said instead of demand from Armenia to fulfill the U.N resolutions, Azerbaijan was asked to hold a referendum on the status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
"This demand is irrespective act towards Azerbaijan's territorial integrity," he added.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
