FM: Oman supports peaceful resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 2 / Trend News U.Sadikhova /

Oman stands for peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"Nagorno-Karabakh is Azerbaijan's territory and we hope that this problem will be resolved peacefully," Omani Foreign Minister Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah told Trend News today.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.

The Omani minister is on a visit to Baku upon the invitation of his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov. His visit is aimed to develop bilateral relations between the two countries.

"Oman and Azerbaijan have a number of agreements on bilateral cooperation," he said. "The sides adopted a plant to develop relationships. We are delighted that the Azerbaijan Embassy will operate in Oman and we plan to open an Omani embassy in Baku in the near future."

The minister visited the national leader Heydar Aliyev memorial. The Omani and Azerbaijani foreign ministers are expected to meet today.
