Azerbaijani Defense Ministry confirms armed incident on contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops (UPDATE -2)

An Azerbaijani soldier, wounded in a shootout provoked by the Armenian side on September 4, died, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence said.

Thus, two Azerbaijani soldiers - 34-year-old Ahmed Abdullayev drafted from Jalilabad region and 24-year-old Farid Akhmadov drafted from Khatai district became victims as a result of the cease-fire violated by the Armenian Armed Forces.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry confirmed the information about the armed incident on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.

Last night Armenian Armed Forces launched an offensive on the positions of Azerbaijani Armed Forces located near Chileburt village of Terter region to take revenge for the loss that the Armenian side has suffered on Aug. 31, the Defense Ministry said today.

As a result of fire, one Azerbaijani soldier was killed, one wounded. According to preliminary reports, the body of the deceased was taken by the Armenian side.

The Armenian media disseminated information about the armed incident on Saturday morning at the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, injuring several people.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding negotiations to resolve the dispute.

Armenia has failed to implement UN Security Council resolutions stipulating the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions.
