Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 4 / Trend S. Agayeva /

Renaming the Azerbaijani cities in the occupied territories, in particular Agdam, by giving it an Armenian name is a new game of certain forces in Armenia, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Head-of-Staff Ramiz Mehdiyev told journalists on Thursday.

According to Mehdiyev, such actions demonstrate the intention of some forces in Armenia to destabilize and worsen the situation.

By the decision of the government of self-proclaimed "Nagorno Karabakh Republic", the Agdam region was renamed as "Akna" and became one of the quarters of the Askeran city.

"I believe that international organizations should strongly condemn such acts of the Armenian side and put an end to such games of the Armenian political elite," Mehdiyev said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
