Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 26 / Trend /

There is no alternative but to find a peaceful settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Former Special Envoy of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Goran Lennmarker said.

"The international community has a concept for resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Lennmarker said at a news conference in Yerevan, Armenia Today reported.

He stressed that the conflicting parties must concentrate their the political will to find a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and not merely a technical solution to the problem.

"Both Armenia and Azerbaijan must give up politics of mutual reproaches and accusations and begin internal debates and discussions about whether there is a willingness to resolve the conflict," he said. "The public must be prepared for a political solution and compromise."

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the United States - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
