A joint declaration on the pairing of the Hungarian city of Gyöngyös and the occupied Azerbaijani town of Shusha was signed in Hungary, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Hungary told Trend today.

The document was signed by Gyöngyös mayor Laszlo Farago and head of the Shusha executive branch, chairman of the "Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan" Public Union Bayram Safarov.

The document reflects the issues related to establishing mutual economic, cultural and humanitarian relations between the twin cities including cooperation in the fields of tourism, education, dissemination of information about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the city of Shusha in Hungary amongst other things.

A meeting with representatives from the Gyöngyös City Hall, the urban public and the Azerbaijani community in Hungary was held before the signing ceremony.

The parties spoke about the atrocities committed by the Armenian invaders of Nagorno-Karabakh and the destruction of historical monuments in Shusha.

A business forum was held with the participation of members of the Azerbaijani delegation and Gyöngyös businessmen.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
