The U.S. government is not involved in the reported trip of a group of California state officials to Nagorno-Karabakh, the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan told Trend on Tuesday.
"We have seen media reports that a group of California state officials may travel to Nagorno-Karabakh. The U.S. government is not involved in this reported trip," the Embassy said.
The Embassy said that the U.S. government's policy regarding Nagorno-Karabakh has not changed.
"We urge all sides to work together to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict," the Embassy said.
Earlier, some Armenian media outlets reported that a delegation of California officials and the representatives of the west wing of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) were expected to visit Armenia and Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh region occupied by Armenia. The visit was scheduled for Sept. 15-24.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the THE OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
