Azerbaijan's Embassy in Latvia is working to correct erroneous information on Azerbaijan's occupied territories presented in a Latvian textbook for secondary schools.

"The book 'New World Geography' indicates Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, but we are concerned that it is marked on the map with the flag of a separatist regime," Azerbaijani Ambassador to Latvia Elman Zeynalov told Trend, commenting on an error in the Latvian textbook.

The ambassador believes that this is the result of activity of people hostile to Azerbaijan.

The diplomatic mission in the country is currently undertaking serious work to correct the error, the diplomat added.

He said this edition may also contain mistakes regarding the territories of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transnistria.

Work is also being conducted within GUAM which includes Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova and efforts are underway and in particular jointly with the ambassadors of the GUAM countries in Latvia in order to correct these errors.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
