By Sabina Ahmadova - Trend:

OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs will visit the region in mid-May, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told journalists on May 8.

They will firstly visit Armenia, afterwards, Nagorno-Karabakh and then Baku, according to the minister.

Mammadyarov pointed out that the purpose of this visit is to carry out a mission on investigating the facts of placement of Syrian refugees in Nagorno-Karabakh. The co-chairs will become familiar with the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The foreign minister also underscored that a letter has been sent to the OSCE chairman in connection with the placement of Syrian refugees in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
