AEOI head: U.S, Russia and France submit joint proposals on uranium exchange to Iran

Following Iran's decision to enrich uranium to 20-percent in the country, the U.S., Russia and France have submitted a joint proposal on uranium exchange to Iran. The issue is under investigation, Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Director Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by the Ilna news agency.

He added that recently several countries engaged in 20-percent uranium enrichment have submitted Iran proposals on uranium exchange.

"We are assessing these proposals," Salehi said.

Moreover, he added that U.N Security Council countries (five permanent + Germany) suggested several proposals.

"Iran may stop uranium enrichment if the country's conditions on uranium enrichment are fulfilled," he added.

Iran began uranium enrichment Feb. 9. Iran has already enriched the first batch of uranium to 20 percent, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said earlier. Iran has the capacity to enrich uranium to 20 percent in the amount of 3-5 kilograms per month, Salehi said earlier. In a recent speech, the president said Iran will increase the level of production threefold.

The U.S. and other Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons for military purposes under the guise of peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying that its nuclear program is aimed solely at meeting the country's electricity needs. The U.N. Security Council adopted five resolutions in connection with the suspension of Iran's nuclear program. Three involve the use of economic sanctions on Iran.
