IAEA Chief Yukiya Amano met Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Fereidoon Abbasi today, ISNA reported.

Amano arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with Iranian officials on "issues of mutual interest and a closer cooperation" between Iran and the IAEA.

Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA deputy director general for safeguards, and Rafael Mariano Grossi, the assistant director general for policy, accompany the UN nuclear body's chief on his trip to Tehran.

At the meeting, Amano noted that IAEA plans to widen and increase cooperation with Iran in other spheres.

Abbasi in his turn said that Iran is using nuclear energy in such spheres as medicine, industry, and agriculture.

Amano's visit comes ahead of the May 23 talks between Iran and the P5+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany) in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The latest round of the talks between Iran and the six members of the P5+1 group was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.
