Zarif, Ashton discuss unofficially in Istanbul

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed unofficially ways of making progress in talks with Group 5+1 on Monday, IRNA reported.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed unofficially ways of making progress in talks with Group 5+1 on Monday, IRNA reported.

They had already discussed the issue for 2 and half hours in Hotel Cheraghan in Istanbul.

Deputy FM in Europe and America Affairs Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi, Deputy FM in Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi and Director General for Political Affairs and International Security Hamid Baˈeidinejad are accompanying Zarif in these negotiations.

Deputy Chief of EU Foreign Policy Helga Schmidt and her assistant Stephan Clement are accompanying Catherine Ashton.

Zarif arrived in Istanbul on Monday morning to meet with Catherine Ashton.

At the airport, Zarif said that he was in Istanbul on his way to Algiers to attend the NAM foreign ministers meeting in Algeria, but he found an opportunity to discuss briefly with Ms. Ashton to follow up the nuclear negotiations.

He added that in the negotiations, only Ms. Ashton and her assistants are attending and this is not talk with Group 5+1.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Marzeiyeh Afkham and Middle Eastern Affairs Director General Reza Aˈmeri are also accompanying Zarif in this trip.

Zarif is going to Algiers, Capital of Algeria, on Tuesday to attend the 17th Foreign Ministers Meeting of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member countries.
