Despite rumors, results of presidential elections not known: vice-president of Afghanistan independent Election Commission (EXLCUSIVE)

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 21 / Trend , D.Khatinoglu/

Vote-counting for yesterday's presidential elections in Afghanistan, in which 50-55 percent of the electorate took part, has ended, but the results have not yet been confirmed, the Vice-President of the Afghan Independent Electoral Commission, Davud Najafi, said.

However, the head of incumbent Afghan President Hamid Karzai's pre-election staff, Din Muhammad, said that the Head of State has gained the majority of the vote in the presidential election held yesterday, Prime-Tass reported.

He said a second round of voting will not be held, ITAR-TASS reported.

Najafi also said that they had received several complaints of fraud during the polling. "We are conducting an investigation into this matter," he said.

Over 50 cases of falsification have been committed during the presidential elections, the head of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah's election campaign, Fazil Sancharaki, said yesterday.

On the telephone from Kabul Najafi told Trend that in general, the elections had been conducted satisfactorily. Despite the threat from the Taliban, 50-55 percent of the population who had the right to vote took part in the election.

Najafi said along with the presidential elections, the elections for members of the provincial councils were held. Votes have not yet been counted in four provinces, including Kabul, Herat, Balkh and Nengarhar.
