2,800 members of Azerbaijani ruling party presented lists to participate in municipal elections

Some 2,800 members of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party submitted signature lists.

"Filling in the signature lists, 2,800 party members who nominated for municipal elections submitted them to the district electoral commissions," the official website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) reported on Oct. 26.

Municipal elections in Azerbaijan will be held on December 23. 15,682 members are envisaged to be elected for 1,718 municipalities.

Municipal elections were held twice - in 1999 and 2004.

Each of the approximately 16,000 members of the NAP nominating for municipal elections presented the necessary documents to the relevant district election commission and took the signature lists to protect their candidature.

NAP was established by the chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Heydar Aliyev in 1992. The current President Ilham Aliyev is the chairman of the Party which has been ruling for already 16 years.
