The US-Azerbaijani security relations, including bilateral defense cooperation, Nagorno-Karabakh negotiation process, Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation, security issues in Afghanistan and future of Gabala RLS have been discussed during the 11th US-Azerbaijan Security Dialogue in Washington, Head of the Azerbaijani delegation Araz Azimov said at a news conference at the US National Press Center on Nov. 4.
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Azimov characterized the negotiations as inspiring.
Assistant secretary of US for political-military affairs Andrew J. Shapiro headed the US delegation during the dialog.
Azimov said during the negotiations both sides developed a proposals package. "We came here within a big delegation, including representatives of a number of official organizations of Azerbaijan. We discussed a variety of issues: starting with principles of strategic cooperation to military and non-military forms of cooperation. We have developed a long list of recommendations that meets both countries' interests. The working groups will start cooperating on those recommendations in the near future," said the Azerbaijani diplomat.
He added that the partnership between Azerbaijan and U.S. is very profound and Baku is happy and pleased to notice further growth of this partnership. "Bilateral relations are viewed through not only bilateral programs of cooperation; we also address threats at the international and regional level and we also consider our bilateral partnership within wider frameworks of Euro-Atlantic institutions," Azimov said.
He stressed that among those recommendations there are also additional security actions in Afghanistan.
"We also expressed our points of view and discussed ways of cooperation in the Caspian Sea security, border control and Gabala RLS," Azimov added.
The discussions also touched the increase of non-military representation of Azerbaijan in Afghanistan. Azimov said Azerbaijan is ready to all forms of cooperation.
He stressed that the energy security was one of issues on the agenda. "We have discussed and will continue consultation of the issues linked to energy infrastructure security and its protection. And that, of course, is related to a bulk of issues; on the other hand, linked with maritime security and counterterrorism activities."
The security dialog also paid a great attention to the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
