Widow of former Georgian president goes on hunger strike

Widow of the first Georgian president Zviad Gamsakhurdia - Manana Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia began the hunger strike on Saturday in front of the office of the Ombudsman of Georgia.

Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia told reporters that she requires freeing her son Tsotne Gamsakhurdia.

"My son did not commit this crime, he is a political prisoner. In addition, he went on hunger strike for 17 days and his health is bad, so the authorities must free him from prison," said the widow of the first president.

Together with Archvadze-Gamsakhurdia, several of her supporters also went on hunger strike.

Tsotne Gamsakhurdia is in jail on charges of inflicting injury to his neighbor David Badzhelidze. Tsotne Gamsakhurdia does not recognize himself guilty and is also on hunger strike in prison.
