On Nov. 20, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev sent a letter of congratulation to Van Rompuy on his election as President of the European Union, AzerTAj state news agency reported.
The letter said Azerbaijan-EU relations have developed successfully over recent years. Azerbaijan and the European Union have cooperated effectively within the framework of the New Neighborhood Policy. The memorandum of understanding on EU-Azerbaijan Strategic Partnership in the field of energy provide new opportunities for joint activity.
"I think we will build our relations in line with our mutual interests and develop our constructive cooperation even more through joint efforts within the framework of the Eastern Partnership initiative," President said in the letter.
