Georgian minister says OSCE necessary to suppress kidnapping in conflict zone

Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 2 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

Georgian State Reintegration Minister Temur Yakobashvili said the OSCE mission's presence in the conflict zone is needed to prevent kidnapping in the region.

He added that the decision to withdraw the mission was wrong and expressed hope that sooner or later the OSCE will return to Georgia.

Yakobashvili made the statement in response to yesterday's comment by Greek Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou on the need to restore the OSCE mission in Georgia.

According to Papandreou, "the opening of the new mission is a step forward."

"I am confident that the presence of the OSCE in the conflict zones and on the whole territory of Georgia today is more necessary than ever," he said.

The OSCE mission ceased operation in Georgia in spring 2009. Russia imposed a veto on the extension of the mission in the old format.
