Georgia, Tbilisi. Dec. 9 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /
Restoring relations with Russia will only be possible after the deoccupation of Georgia. The statement was made by parliamentary majority leader Giorgi Gabashvili, while commenting on a statement by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
"The real convergence and restoration of relations with Russia are in our interests. But it will happen only after the deoccupation of our territories. And now, when the occupation of Georgia continues, it is impossible to talk about new relations," Gabashvili said.
He said if Russia's leadership changes its approach toward Georgia, then it will be possible to talk about new relations.
As to opening the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Georgia-Russia border, Gabashvili said it is in the interest of Georgian citizens and will be implemented under the supervision of the Georgian government.
