Azerbaijani opposition party accuses U.S. of supporting separatism

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.15 / Trend , A.Huseynbala /

An Azerbaijani opposition party has accused the U.S. of indirectly supporting separatism by providing assistance to Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The U.S. providing $8 millon in assistance to Nagorno-Karabakh is indirect support for separatism," the Azerbaijan Democratic Party said yesterday at an in-house meeting.

A joint conference between the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives resulted in the adoption of a bill Dec. 8, which envisages providing financial assistance to Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the opposition party, the move by the U.S. does not correspond with its role as a OSCE Minsk Group's co-chair in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The Azerbaijan Democratic Party was established by Sardar Jalaloglu in 1991. The party was radically against the authorities until 2007. The party then adopted a new course to establish a dialogue with the government from January 2008.
