Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Dec. 17 / Trend H. Hasanov /
Expanded talks between Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedow and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama were held in Tokyo this week.
"This visit to Japan is considered an important move toward expanding our traditionally friendly intergovernmental dialogue," the PM said.
He stressed the sides' "proximity and identity of views" in solving global issues.
Hatoyama called the energy, transport, telecommunications and water management sectors perspective areas for future partnership. Japanese companies are preparing project proposals to reconstruct an international seaport in Turkmenbashi and a facility to desalinate seawater.
The parties agreed to continue Turkmenistan's cooperation with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The JICA is a structural subdivision of a Japanese governmental assistance program covering areas such as banking, agribusiness and management.
"The Turkmen delegation's visit to Japan is the first in the history of international relations," Berdimuhammedow said, expressing his gratitude to Japan for supporting Ashgabat's recent U.N. initiatives.
Japan supported Turkmenistan's proposal in the U.N. to begin an international dialogue on the establishment of reliable gas transport infrastructure mechanisms, acting as a cosponsor of a resolution adopted by the U.N. General Assembly a year ago.
The Turkmen leader said the parties agreed on the further consolidation of efforts to counter new threats and challenges to international security, including combating terrorism, extremism, transnational crime and illicit trafficking of drugs.
Berdimuhammedow invited Japan to participate in the International Conference on Disarmament Issues in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin in Ashgabat in the first half of 2010.
