Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 23 / Trend U.Sadikhova /
The Azerbaijani Press Council started monitoring district election commissions in the regions.
The monitoring aims to oversee the activities of journalists covering the municipal elections and get acquainted with the working conditions of the voting process.
Azerbaijan launched the municipal elections. The country has about 4.6 million registered voters.
Voting began in constituencies throughout the country at 08:00 a.m.
About 15,682 members are planned to be elected to 1,718 municipalities. Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.
Azerbaijan has registered about 31,000 candidates, including 6,108 women, for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections.
The council established a board group whose members are monitoring the elections across the country.
The Press Council also established a hotline: (012) 561 82 46 and (012) 561 80 37.
Journalists can report problems and obstacles they encounter while covering the election.
The CEC will provide information on ballots at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
"Municipal elections have their own specificity in contrast to the presidential and parliamentary elections. There are over 1,700 different ballots and counting votes, so information from district electoral commissions cannot be provided promptly as in the presidential and parliamentary elections," Central Elections Commission Chairman Mazahir Panakhov said earlier.
The municipal elections will be finished at 7:00 p.m.
