The Azerbaijani Embassy in Russia has submitted a protest note to the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with State Duma Deputy Speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky's statement, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesman Elkhan Polukhov told Trend .
In his interview to the Latvian newspaper Neatkarigas Rita Avize, Zhirinovsky said that "if the Nagorno-Karabakh proclaims its independence, Russia should recognize it."
The Azerbaijani embassy's note expresses protests against the Vice Speaker's such calls and states such statements counteracts the spirit of relations between the two countries, Polukhov said.
